Introduction

The IP (Bootcamp) course is an intensive ultrasound course that provides the opportunity to obtain the Independent Practitioner (IP) certification from Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society (CPoCUS). This course is ideal for participants who have prior scanning exepreince or already completed an introductory course such as the Montreal PoCUS AC CORE, EDE/EDU-1, MUSE, or MTL-SONO, etc. However, no prior ultrasound scanning is mandatory; for those with no prior scanning experience, there will be an additional mandatory session on the Friday evening before the course as well as additional mandatory reading material.

Objectives

1. Complete 50 images of the heart, aorta, abdomen and uterus

2. Complete 10 images of the diaphragm bilaterally (pleural effusion)

3. Complete 10 images of the anterior lungs (pneumothorax)

4. Complete 5 images of the male pelvis (free fluid)

5. Complete the written, visual and practical exams in order to obtain the IP certification.

Note: Successful completion of the written, visual and practical exams is required for obtaining IP certification.

Course Format

The IP bootcamp course is an online and hands-on course. There are two full days of bedside scanning (7AM – 7PM). The written, visual, and practical exams required for IP certification are included during the 2 days.

Prior to the course:

The participant will:

• Register and complete the review modules on the CPoCUS website. This access also allows for the written exam to be taken during the bootcamp (mandatory).

• Complete the formative quizzes (Maintenance of Competency (MOC) Quiz).

CPoCUS IP Certification:

To obtain the Independent Practitioner certification, the participant must

• Pass the CPoCUS written exam

• Pass the CPoCUS practical exam

• Pass the CPoCUS visual exam

• Pay the fee to the CPoCUS for the official certificate issued by the society.

• Be a member in good standing of the CPoCUS (pay the annual fee).

Lunch and snacks are provided on both days.

The following fees must be paid by the participant directly to CPoCUS:

• Access fee for review modules and written exam ($25)

• Fee for the issuance of the official Independent Practitioner Certificate by the CPoCUS ($125)

What are the benefits of obtaining CPoCUS Independent practitioner certification?

- Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society provides national level certification for the safe and effective use of point of care ultrasound. Bedside ultrasound education literature suggests a need for a minimum of 50 scans to become proficient in each indication. Obtaining IP certification significantly improves your skills and confidence in CORE indications.

- CPoCUS independent practitioners can certify others/ supervise scans.

- CPoCUS independent practitioners (staff physicians, residents, and medical students) can work as an instructor and teach nationally to IP candidates (teaching PoCUS strongly improves skills)

- In Quebec, staff physicians (family physicians or specialists) can get compensated for use of PoCUS only if they obtain IP certification.

Is IP Certification guaranteed?

- While every effort is made to ensure participants complete acquired scans and the knowledge to pass your visual and practical exams, unfortunately there is always a possibility that a participant will fail the retake of an exam or not obtain all the needed scans to qualify for IP certification with CPoCUS. If the instructors do not feel a participant is safe and competent to perform the applications they may recommend additional training be obtained at a later date. We work hard to identify those needing extra assistance and spend additional time addressing challenges. Armed with a solid understating of the pre-course material and dedication to learning on scanning days, nearly all participants succeed in obtaining their IP certification.

Is there an opportunity to teach with Montreal PoCUS after obtaining IP certification?

- For those passionate about teaching and ultrasound, there is an apprentice instructor program though which those interested can teach PoCUS.

Is there another way to pay for the course?

If you are unable to pay by e-transfer or online by credit card, contact us (montrealpocus@gmail.com) about sending a cheque or money order. Registration is confirmed upon deposit of payment.

What is the cancellation Policy?

- Full refund minus $350 for any cancellations no later than 4 weeks before the first day of the course. No refunds for cancellations less than 4 weeks before the course.

- Course Cancellation: In the event that the course must be cancelled for any reason, participants will be automatically registered for a futrefunded the full amount of the course fee.

Une expérience préalable de l'échographie est préférable mais pas obligatoire. Pour ceux qui n'ont pas d'expérience préalable en échographie, il y aura une session supplémentaire obligatoire le vendredi soir avant le cours (22 septembre 2023).

Introduction

Le cours PI (Bootcamp) est un cours intensif d’échographie qui donne l’opportunité d’obtenir la certification de praticien indépendant (PI) de la Société Canadienne d’Échographie Ciblée, SCÉC (CPoCUS). Ce cours est idéal pour participants ayant déjà complété un cours d'introduction tel que le cours Montréal PoCUS AC CORE, ÉDU-1, MUSE, ou MTL-SONO. Cependant, aucune échographie préalable n'est obligatoire. Pour ceux qui n'ont pas d'expérience préalable en échographie, il y aura une session supplémentaire obligatoire le vendredi soir précédant le cours (10 mars 2023).

Objectifs

1. Compléter 50 images du cœur, de l’aorte, de l’abdomen et de l’utérus

2. Compléter 10 images du diaphragme bilatéralement (épanchement pleural)

3. Compléter 10 images des poumons antérieurs (pneumothorax)

4. Compléter 5 images du bassin masculin (liquide libre)

5. Compléter les examens écrit, visuel et pratique dans le but d’obtenir la certification PI.

Note : L’obtention de la certification PI est conditionnel à la réussite des examens écrit, visuel et pratique.

Format du cours

Le cours PoCUS-PI est une formation en ligne et en présentiel. Il y a deux jours complets pour couvrir les notions d’échographie au chevet (7h – 19h). Les examens écrits, visuels et pratiques requis pour la certification PI sont inclus pendant les 2 jours.

Préparation préalable

Le participant devra :

• S’inscrire et compléter les modules de révision sur le site de la SCÉC. Cet accès permet également de réaliser l’examen écrit qui aura lieu pendant le bootcamp (obligatoire)

• Compléter l’examen formatif (Maintenance of Competency (MOC) Quiz)

Certification PI de la SCÉC Pour obtenir la certification de praticien indépendant, le participant doit obligatoirement :

• Réussir l’examen écrit de la SCÉC

• Réussir l’examen pratique de la SCÉC

• Réussir l’examen visuel de la SCÉC

• Acquitter, auprès de la SCÉC, les frais relatifs à l’obtention du certificat officiel émis par la société.

• Être membre en règle de la SCÉC (acquitter les frais annuels).

Les frais d’inscription incluent le repas du midi.

Les frais suivants devront être acquittés par le participant directement auprès de la SCÉC :

• Frais d’accès aux modules de révision et à l’examen écrit (25 $)

• Frais pour la délivrance par la SCÉC du certificat officiel de praticien indépendant (125 $)

Quels sont les avantages d'obtenir la certification de praticien indépendant auprès de la SCÉC?

- La Société Canadienne d’Échographie Ciblée offre une certification de niveau national pour l'utilisation sécuritaire et efficace de l'échographie ciblée. La documentation sur l'enseignement de l'échographie ciblée suggère qu'il faut un minimum de 50 échographies pour devenir compétent dans chaque indication. L'obtention de la certification PI améliore considérablement vos compétences et votre confiance dans les indications CORE.

- Les praticiens indépendants SCÉC peuvent certifier d'autres personnes et superviser des scans.

- Les praticiens indépendants SCÉC (médecins, résidents et étudiants en médecine) peuvent travailler en tant qu'instructeurs et enseigner à l'échelle nationale aux candidats PI (l'enseignement du PoCUS améliore considérablement les compétences).

- Au Québec, les médecins (médecins de famille ou spécialistes) ne peuvent être rémunérés pour l'utilisation de la PoCUS que s'ils obtiennent la certification PI.

La certification PI est-elle garantie ?

- Bien que tous les efforts soient faits pour s'assurer que les participants acquièrent les scans et les connaissances nécessaires pour réussir les examens visuels et pratiques, il est malheureusement toujours possible qu'un participant échoue à la reprise d'un examen ou n'obtienne pas tous les scans nécessaires pour se qualifier pour la certification PI avec la PoCUS. Si les instructeurs estiment qu'un participant n'est pas qualifié et compétent pour effectuer les applications, ils peuvent recommander une formation supplémentaire à une date ultérieure. Nous nous efforçons d'identifier ceux qui ont besoin d'une assistance supplémentaire et nous consacrons du temps supplémentaire à la résolution des problèmes. Armés d'une solide compréhension du matériel de pré-cours et d'un dévouement à l'apprentissage lors des journées de balayage, presque tous les participants réussissent à obtenir leur certification PI.

Y a-t-il une possibilité d'enseigner avec Montreal PoCUS après avoir obtenu la certification PI ?

- Pour les personnes passionnées par l'enseignement et l’échographie, il existe un programme d'apprentis instructeurs par lequel les personnes intéressées peuvent enseigner le PoCUS.

Y a-t-il un autre moyen de payer pour le cours ?

- Si vous ne pouvez pas payer par e-transfert, contactez-nous (montrealpocus@gmail.com) pour envoyer un chèque ou un mandat poste. L'inscription est confirmée dès le dépôt du paiement.

Quelle est la politique d'annulation ?

- Remboursement intégral moins 350 $ pour toute annulation au plus tard 3 semaines avant le premier jour du cours. Aucun remboursement pour les annulations effectuées moins de 3 semaines avant le cours.
